About Us

Channel Construction is the parent company of Skookum Sales & Recycling. We say "Southeast Alaska Original Metal Recycler" because Channel Construction has been cleaning up Juneau as well as many other locations all over southeast(such as Haines, Skagway, Yakutat, Hoonah, Yakobi Island, Pelican, Tenakee Springs, Sitka, Kake, Petersburg, Wrangell, Thorn Bay, Coffman Cove, Klawock, Hydaburg, Metlakatla, Thorn Bay, Craig, Angoon and many other remote locations) since the 1950's.

William R. Tonsgard II took over Channel Construction & Channel Sanitation (the landfill) from his father William R. Tonsgard I in 1979. Mr. Tonsgard was always interested in waste reduction and recycling ; recycling paper and cardboard in the 70's and always trying to find a new way to reuse waste in a productive manor. In the mid 80's he installed a garbage incinerator at the landfill to put an end to Juneau's trash going into the ground. In 1999 the landfill was sold to Waste Management and wanted to focus more on the construction and scrap metal recycling instead.

Skookum Sales & Recycling yard in Lemon Creek opened it's gates in the spring of 2008 when we began the first Junk Car Round up under the name Skookum. At the same time we began taking scrap metal free of charge. In the fall of 2008 we started paying for metals like: copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, lead and zinc.

About The Owner

William R. Tonsgard II, grew up working alongside his father in logging camps throughout Southeast Alaska. When he wasn't out at camp he would collect bits of scrap metal and sell it to a local down by the Aurora Harbor.

Through all Mr. Tonsgard's business ventures the giving back to the community has always been very important to him. Whether that be donating time, work, or food to the needy during Christmas and Thanksgiving.
